How to Show Up in ChatGPT and AI Search: A Practical GEO Guide

More customers now ask ChatGPT instead of typing into Google. Here is what your website needs so AI assistants pick you as a source.

Showing up in AI search means that ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews use your website as a source when they answer a question. The work behind it is often called GEO, short for Generative Engine Optimization. This guide covers where AI assistants get their information, the technical and content steps that make your site quotable, and how to measure the result.

Why this matters now

A visitor planning a holiday in Antalya used to search Google and click through ten blue links. Today many of them type the question straight into ChatGPT and get one answer with three or four recommendations. Google now shows an AI summary above the results for many queries too. If your business is not named in that answer, you are not part of the comparison at all.

GEO versus SEO

SEO is about ranking; GEO is about being quoted inside the answer. The foundation is the same: a crawlable site, a clean heading structure and fast pages. The difference is in how content is written. Language models prefer clear, self-contained paragraphs and facts they can verify. Generic slogans such as "quality service at fair prices" give them nothing to quote. We cover the basics in what is an SEO-friendly website.

Where AI assistants get their information

ToolSourceWhat it means for you
ChatGPT searchOAI-SearchBot crawler plus search partnersAllow the bot; being indexed in Bing helps
Google AI Overviews / AI ModeGoogle's search indexClassic SEO and Search Console still matter
GeminiGoogle index and the Google-Extended tokenYour Google visibility carries over
PerplexityPerplexityBot and its own crawlingAllow the bot, keep sources clear
ClaudeWeb search via Claude-SearchBotNeeds permission in robots.txt

Almost every assistant either crawls your site with its own bot or relies on a large search index. If the bot is blocked or you are not indexed, you cannot appear.

Seven steps to become visible in AI answers

  1. Check your robots.txt. GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended should not be disallowed. Since mid-2025 Cloudflare can block AI crawlers by default on new domains, so check that setting too.
  2. Register with Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap to both. Bing picks up new pages quickly through IndexNow.
  3. Serve key content as HTML. Prices, services, opening hours and your address should be in the page source as text. Content injected later by JavaScript is invisible to many AI crawlers.
  4. Answer the question in the first paragraph of every page, then go into detail.
  5. Add structured data (JSON-LD): Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, Article and FAQPage describe your business in a form machines understand.
  6. Publish llms.txt and llms-full.txt, a plain-text summary of your site for AI tools. See what is llms.txt.
  7. Be consistent elsewhere. Your business name, address and phone number should match on Google Business Profile, directories, local news sites and review platforms. Assistants trust facts they can confirm in more than one place.

What we did on our own site

We applied all of this to grapyweb.com first, and anyone can check it:

  • Our robots.txt explicitly allows 12 AI crawlers, including GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended.
  • grapyweb.com/llms.txt lists our services, packages, work and blog posts with short descriptions. It is generated from the database, so it updates itself when we publish.
  • llms-full.txt carries the full text of our services and articles in Turkish and English.
  • Every page ships server-rendered HTML, JSON-LD and hreflang tags for both languages.

We set up the same foundation as standard on client sites. Details are on our business websites page.

Writing content assistants like to quote

  • Use question-style subheadings, for example "How long is a boat trip in Kemer?"
  • Give concrete facts: opening hours, service area, lead times.
  • Add short tables and lists; comparisons get quoted often.
  • Show a last-updated date. Stale information loses trust.
  • Build your FAQ from questions real customers ask.

How to measure it

In GA4, filter referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. Search Console does not separate AI Overviews traffic; it is counted as regular web search. Once a month, ask ChatGPT and Perplexity your target questions and note whether you are mentioned. Simple, but it works.

Common mistakes

  • Blocking every bot by accident through a security plugin or CDN rule.
  • Putting services and prices only inside images or PDFs.
  • Repeating the same generic intro on every page.
  • Listing a different phone number or business name on different sites.
  • Writing hidden content "for AI" that users never see. It does not help and it is risky for search.

An example from Antalya

A tourist asks ChatGPT for "a boutique hotel in Kaleiçi with a sea view and airport transfer". The answer is assembled from hotel websites, Google reviews and travel platforms. A hotel whose site has English and German pages, states the transfer option and location clearly and answers common questions is far easier to include. A hotel whose site is mostly photos gives the assistant nothing to work with.

Frequently asked questions

What is GEO, and does it replace SEO?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) aims to get your content used as a source in answers from AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. It does not replace SEO; it builds on the same technical foundation.

Do I have to pay to appear in ChatGPT?

No. There is no payment involved in appearing in organic AI answers. What matters is that your site can be crawled, is easy to understand and looks trustworthy.

How do I know if my site blocks AI crawlers?

Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for Disallow lines under GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot. If you use Cloudflare, also check its AI crawler blocking setting.

Can I appear in AI answers without an llms.txt file?

Yes. llms.txt is a helpful extra, not a requirement. The deciding factors are content available as plain HTML, clear answers and consistent mentions of your business on other sites.

How long before I see results?

Technical fixes are usually crawled within weeks, but being recommended regularly can take months. Track referrals from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai in GA4 to see progress.

Is GEO worth it for a small business?

It matters most for local service businesses, because people ask assistants for direct recommendations. The basic steps are cheap and fit naturally into regular SEO work.
